MRO aircraft hangar Teruel airport: where climate comfort and sustainability fly high
To meet the growing demand for aircraft maintenance, TARMAC AEROSAVE, a European leader in aircraft lifecycle management, has commissioned the construction of an innovative hangar at Teruel Airport, Spain.
With over 8.000 m2 of surface area and a height of 34 meters, the hangar, the largest metal-textile hangar in the world, is designed to accommodate up to one Airbus A380 or four A320s at the same time. Designed and built in just nine months by SPANTECH IINTERNATIONAL, a Belgian company specializing in modular structures, the project represents an engineering milestone in terms of innovation, flexibility and sustainability.
To transform a space of this size into a functional and energy-efficient environment, 52 ELITURBO air destratification and mixers fans by IMPRESIND, with proven effectiveness in improving air distribution and reducing energy consumption in large industrial spaces, were installed.
THE CHALLENGE
The hangar presented significant technical challenges related to its structural characteristics (95 meters long, 85 meters wide and 34 meters high):
• Thermal destratification: preventing the accumulation of hot air in the high areas to reduce energy consumption.
• Operating comfort: maintaining uniform temperatures to improve working conditions in all areas of the hangar, including the highest points.
Thanks to the collaboration with SPANTECH, IMPRESIND has supplied 52 ELITURBO units, strategically positioned to meet the specific needs of the structure, without interfering with the activities and transforming the largest metal-textile hangar into a sustainable and highly functional environment:
Solution
• Energy efficiency: by eliminating thermal stratification, energy costs for heating are reduced by up to 30% in environments of this size.
• Optimal operating comfort: uniform temperatures make the working environment more comfortable, contributing to the productivity of the team.
The Teruel hangar is a true engineering masterpiece. An innovative design, completely dismountable and reusable.
Built with a steel and aluminium structure, totally recyclable at the end of its life cycle, it also demonstrates the commitment of TARMAC AEROSAVE, and the project partners SPANTECH INTERNATIONAL and IMPRESIND, in the search for efficient solutions for sustainability and intelligent management of resources, as well as an unprecedented achievement in managing the challenges in the design of large industrial environments.
